Fax from Vista???

11/04/2008 12:56 AM

I checked the archives, and couldn't find anything about the problem being able to fax, from vista..

I have a cheapy, low end wal mart type computer with Vista

First, I couldn't find the fax program on it, so, I bought winfax.

In the printer section, it will Not recognize the fax program, thus I cannot choose to either print or fax.

Also, we cannot fax invoices from Quickbooks??

Anyone have any answers, other than wipe it and go buy XP pro... (I have XP pro on other computers and love it)

Don

Fax from Vista? Good luck!

I can just barely, by using work-arounds, Fax from Windows 95.

Re: Fax from Vista??? Fax with Vista.

You did not say which version of Vista; or whether you have fax modem installed or are interfaced to a standalone fax machine.

Vista Ultimate has Fax; it's easily accessed; and can send and receive (offline or online) through either hardware devices as well as through proxy.

As to other Vista versions...unsure about that one.

Based on experience, this is an "issue" that I'm confident comes up a lot. Lesson to be learned: if fax-ing is important, verify system capability before purchasing.

Step 1:

Find and thoroughly read the manual that came with Winfax. It's a good old application and typically reliable. Also check with Winfax (the company) for help making it work with Vista. (Perhaps there were system or set up requirments you overlooked? Did you perhaps forget to disable virus and spyware checking during install?)

Step 2: Finish step 1.

Step 3 (if 1 & 2 don't do it): Remove and reinstall. Go from there.

If all else fails, callwave.com (IIRC) will give you a fax number. You can send and receive faxes using your e-mail address. I had a free version to receive faxes for several years, bur stopped using it and they stopped my service.

Try enabling the compatibility option. To do this right click the .EXE install program and select properties. In that menu you will see the option to install the program as an XP service pack 2 program. This may install it correctly.

Minor technical edit to ehow.com's ["free" cookies] procedure:

  • Step1: Connect your computer's dial-up fax modem or fax/multi-function machine to your computer using appropriate slot (internal modem) or port (external/remote modem). Connect computer's or fax/multi-function machine's fax modem to telephone line at wall jack. (Note: Facsimilies cannot be sent or received over the telephone line using a standard [internal or external] dial-up modem.) Check that your phone line is securely connected to your computer.

With changes accepted:

I haven't used it but my HP all in one printer tries to get me to set up my fax every time I make a software change to my printer. Hp is bad about add ware. I've been lazy and HP tries to install its online sales program even after I optioned it out on the install. I'll have to fix that soon.
