Laptop Monitor as TV

11/05/2008 10:00 PM

Hi, I recently bought a TV box (external tv tuner?) so that I can watch TV on an LCD monitor. Unfortunately, I don't have an LCD monitor yet. Can I hook it up to my laptop so that I can watch TV on my laptop display?

There is a DB15 connector on many laptops but the signal is, I think, for an external monitor to the laptop. So, I am afraid that you need a LCD monitor, unless you have the schematic diagram of your laptop, and you know where to inject the external signal, coming from your TV box (if the signal is compatible with the LCD screen of your laptop). If you buy a TV add card for your laptop, you spend about the same money as you would spend for a 20 inch LCD monitor. I would buy the LCD monitor.

Whats the signals coming from your tuner box?

RGB? USB? Composite? HDMI? VGA (DB15HD) <- high density as its a std DB9 size with 15 pins

These will affect how you attach the box to your laptop.

Is it a plugin USB adaptor for DVB recpetion?

If plug in to your laptop, then there will be no problems, you just install the supplied software and happy tuning.

If its 1 of the other varieties, you will need a PCMCIA card that will accept those signals, convert to what the computer can handle, then happy watching.

Hi Dodskie

I have a plug in USB tuner unit, less than $100Aust, works very well on my CRT monitor, I can record from it also. Picture can sit in the corner as shown or full screen.

For some reason the picture doesn't come out with Print Screen!

Tony

No, generally the pic will not come out with print screen, as the controlling interface is different, if you move the live picture across the desktop, it stutter and jumps "outside" the viewing window, its using screen memory for the picture, but as its a live video, you could have a scanning issue so you hit print screen between frames or something, so, print screen is disabled.

Your viewer program will usually have a "capture frame" or "Capture Image" that you can grab the needed frame.

The only way you can is if you have an input on your laptop for whatever type signal your using:Component (RBG), Composite (red, white, yellow), HDMI, cable or whatever. If your laptop has this input then typically you can use this as a monitor because the laptop is set up for this type of media. Alot of computers have an output, but no input. These inputs are not common on most laptops. If your laptop does not have an input for what you need, then you would be better off in the long run as far as price and hassle, going and purchasing an LCD monitor.

This KWorld PlusTV USB HDTV Tuner ought to fix you up.... I don't think it has to be HDTV signal for this to work. It sounds as if standard digital will work with this USB device.
