weighted pallet PRValves

11/07/2008 7:36 AM

We had designed a pressure vessel for 300 lts. The vessel is to be operated at 15 psig pressure which is normal pressure in a typical cooking pressure vessel. My request is where do I find the relationship/correlation for the internal pressure rating to that of the weight of the 'weighted pallet pressure relief valve'. We picked up a 76 gram simple relief valve from the conventional pressure cooker. Now how do we decide the actual weight of the relief valve for a higher pressure process. The vessel is designed for a maximum operating pressure of up to 30 psig.

Thanks for your inputs.

A safety valve should have the possibility to let through all generated vapour by the incoming heat so that the pressure will not grow over the given limit. It is not only a problem of pressure threshold but more than that a problem of potential flow. The conventional pressure cooker has (I presume) less than 300 cdm and a much lower surface through which heat is introduced so that the vapour flow will be a lot smaller than the one you could expect. Thus it is not enough to modify the weight but also important to check if the opening will be big enough.
