Stitching the Last Patch on a Football

11/09/2008 7:42 AM

Hello all.

I am always amazed that how a ball(specially football) maker stitch the last patch (leather hexagonal pc) on it. Can respectable CR4 Members put some light?

Haha..... good question!!

I would guess that they stitch the football through the pressure valve hole?

Or possibly inside out..... nawwww they couldn't pull it through the pressure valve hole?

Anyone?

Its not that hard to find....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PX06ABFLtvc The hardest part is pulling the child out when she's done sewing.

Yep. They do it from the inside.

I may not be respectable, but:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZXRcISljbc

If you don't feel like watching the whole thing--It comes down to the last four stitches and the final knot is pulled into the ball.

Hard not to get a little philosophical watching the work that goes into one.

Simple, they do the last stitch first.

Haven't you read that scripture that says the last will be first?

So we are saying that there is not currently a designed machine that produces these balls from start to finish? Sounds like a challenge.

Football (soccer) manufacture was not on my list of things I knew something about, so I started looking, thanks to your question. First, I found that the majority of them come from one city in Pakistan. Then I found this most troubling bit of information.

I have done it, but it's hard to explain....
It only needs one short seam to be left unstitched so that the ball can be turned the right way in..then...
The final seam is then stitched using two curved needes one on each end of the thread, a bit like lacing a shoe, but not pulled tight. That way there is enough space to get the needles needle in and out.
Once the seam is finished it can be pulled tight (again like tightening a shoe lace) and the two ends of thread knotted together and pressed dosn onto the join where the corners of the panels meet.

Del (pls give GA and send tin of tuna asap)

GA voted, sorry, no tins of tuna currently available. Will you settle for a tuna steak à la bistro Français? <just say yes, you KNOW you want it...>

Another GA for you, puss puss. Well done.

Can't say as we have any tuna on hand. Would ocean whitefish + salmon do?
