Custom Extension Spring

11/10/2008 3:51 PM

Hi,

I am looking for a manufacturer who can make me a custom extension spring. I have attached a diagram of the type of spring that I require and the specification. Note that on the other end of the spring there is also an arm which goes from south to north, rather than what is shown here(going from north to south).

As you can see from the dimensions spring is quite small. The two main requirements are that the spring has to extend from 10mm to around 15mm and is required to hold a weight of around 150 grams.

The design that uses the spring has not been formalised yet so there is some scope in which spring(and arm) can be used.

Hi bhavanavishwanath,

To answer your questions:

1. Where is this are used?

ANS : This will be located on a desk. Around the spring will be fitted a rubber sleeve. Two pieces of plastic either side of the spring(which the arm fit into through a hole) will extend the spring.

2. What will be the type of load on this spring?

ANS : Not much, around 150 grams at most. The tension needs to be stiff enough so that it cant extend much after this. Also I need to think about the fact that it dont want the spring break at this tension! If thats possbile for such a small spring. These issues need to be discussed with the manufacturer though.

3. How many qty is needed?

Obviously I need some samples first. Then I will need around a 500, then depending on the order intake ....

Hope you can help.

That sharp corner should be replaced by a radius.

Yes. I think in reality it will have to, although the intention is that the spring is to be pushed onto a plastic cylinder(diameter same as the spring). and the arm locates in an hole within the cylinder. The arm can be elevated slightly vertically (different than what is shown in the diagram) if this easies manufacturing.

Where are you located ? In every country there at least 10 spring sources possible. Without country difficult to give you a hint.

There are thousands of spring manufacturers in UK.
Google 'em.

If it's near Harlow I can give you some leads (when I get back to work)
Check out the engineering journals too.

For small quantities and prototypes of custom springs, you might also consider making your own. McMaster-Carr (and I'm sure other similar outfits) have several different types of spring winders for making compression, extension and torsion springs from about 1/4" - 1-1/4" (6.4 - 31.8 mm) inside diameters. See www.mcmaster.com.

Try Motion Dynamics. They make springs close to the drawing you have.

For a lot of my sourcing (and I found a lot of spring manufacturers) I use mfgquote.com. You submit the specs you need for your part and several manufacturers will provide you with a quote. If you haven't given enough information for the quote, they will contact you by your preferred method (email, call, etc.). You can even narrow the field by region.
