Excel Formula

11/12/2008 3:18 PM

Good afternoon. I'm trying to write a formula in Excel. I want to say if x=/>7, then y=1; but if x=/<6, then y=0.8. How can I do that? Thx.

Let's say your value is in cell a1:

=IF(A1>=7,1, IF(A1<=6,0.8,"inbetween"))

If the value is between 6 and 7, you will get a value of "inbetween"

Hi there

What you are asking is very basic and Excel tells you how anyway. If you tye

=if(

into a cell, Excel will display the syntax required.

You formula would read

=if(a1<1.7,"OK")

Hint: always type in lower case; when Excel recognises the command or cell reference, it automatically puts these in upper case (IF, A1 etc). You can then easily spot syntax errors in long formulas as they will still be in lower case.

One of the icons on the Standard toolbar is an italic fx. Clicking on that will give you a list of al the functions in Excel. Select IF and you'll get a form to fill in. It has three lines: test (x=>7), if true (y=1) and if false (y=.8) Looking at your question, what if x=6.5?

Good morning Professor HarryBurt. Thx for enlightening me. This old sliderule guy really appreciates it.

I have since realized that loophole and changed it to read if x =,>1.7, then y; and if x < 1.7, then z. Thx for your excellent post.

Glad to help. BTW, I have my old Log-Log Duplex in my desk drawer. It's mahogany, with teflon slides.

Agreed. I can't believe how many impressive engineering projects were done with one. I didn't get any serious computer assistance until 1982, and worked on some pretty big projects before that. 30 ft dia tunnel boring machine, for instance.
