CO2 Pipelines

11/15/2008 1:21 AM

Gents and Ladies

We are designing a CO2 pipeline, 99.8% CO2 using GRE pipe.

What material should one use for valve trim and other metal components such as oriface fittings?

Many thanks,

chama

Easy - Hire Consultant to do it. You are already not aware of the materials how do you expect to undertake the engineering & designing???

The real question I have with repect to this CO2 pipeline is ensuring there is no water in the CO2. Water in these operation cause the subsequent byproduct called carbonic acid.

Can you ensure that the pipeline will remain dry (100%) at all times?

What processes are you dploy prior to product delivery to ensur eno water content?

Many thanks.

The CO2 is saturated with water. That is the reason we are using GRE pipe. What I was concerned about was the parts of the system that will remain as a metal, orifice fittings and valves.

What trim material for the valves? What material for the orifice fitting?

Stainless steel is always a good option for highly corrosive environments.

A number of years ago a CO2 pipeline was built from NE New Mexico to the Permian Basin in Texas. The source was a native deposit of CO2 which was to be used for tertiary oil flooding. The designers were concerned about formation of carbonic acid such that the 16" pipeline is stainless steel for corrosion resistance.

You might want to HAZOP the material selection as a leak could cause a serious environmental liability especially if routed near population centers.
