Preserving IP: Research, Development, Application

11/16/2008 5:18 AM

How do the approaches differ for securing and preserving IP between Research, Development, Design and Production in an organisation?

I am not referring to IP security in the sense of protecting it from external threats, but rather internal threats such as the phenomenon of islands/silos of knowledge and the challenge of retaining the knowledge generated when the scientists and engineers move on.

I understand that for design phase to production information is generally more formalised and that Configuration Management can be applied in these phases. I do suspect, though, that working with scientists requires a different approach.

Any insights to share?

Team work is your friend. Experienced and intelligent individuals who work in teams are usually quite willing to share their knowledge with their teammates (if they are on good terms, that is).

It's quite impossible for the entire team to pack up and go all at once, so there you have it. Those who remain will do the same with newcomers etc.

Don't keep people isolated. Create a team mentality that makes their work easier, and they'll embrace it. Don't make people feel that you are teaming them up with others only so that they can pass on the knowledge.

If you do it this way, everyone benefits.

By the way, storing information on 'systems' doesn't quite work the way you want it: you may store a drawing or a spec, but this doesn't preserve the intellectual process that led to it. People are the only real 'memory' of the company.

Hope this helps
