Do you want to change all folder lettering to the same color or just change them individually? What version are you running?

Hi,

Sorry it took me so long to get back. I'm doing some remodeling and only blog during my rest breaks.

I don't believe you can do that. There are third party add-ins that will allow what you want, though I don't recall their names.

Sorry I can't help. But, I have to say that's one of the best ideas I've seen. There are hundreds of pointless ways of customising windows: colour coding of folders would be really useful.

In Word: select the text you want to change; click on Format; Font; the Font tab (if not already selected); Font color (drop down); select the colour you want, and click OK.

I found info on creating icons in Windows XP at the link below. Did not find anything directly for Vista but you may be able to do the same for Vista as XP.

That was a perfect place to start. I'm going to try it out in Server 2003 to XP PRO.

Thanks for the link, and I did give you a point, for knowing where to find a way to deal with the post, that is, change the color by setting up a new icon for it and changing the icon in the <Properties> tab.

Good thinking. Clean and just outside the box. Sort of like lowering the water rather than raising the bridge.

That would not give him individual control though.

I've created icons using Visual C++, and attached them to unknown file types and known file types alike.

Usually once you change an icon for a specific file type, every file of that type will change it's icon as well.

Welcome aboard! While I don't have a clue how to go about that (I run on XP, not Vista) I think that is a potentially useful concept. I couldn't give you a "good answer" vote because it was a question, not an answer, but I did rate this thread 5-star because I think it's a great question...

Regards!

Further to my prvious post:

It has coloured Alphabets also

Key features:

  • Folder Marker can change a folder icon with one mouse click
  • Folder Marker can mark folders by priority (high, normal, low), by degree of work complete (done, half-done, planned), by work status (approved, rejected, pending) or by the type of the information contained in a folder (work files, important files, temp files, private files).
  • Folder Marker can change a folder's color to normal, dark and light states.
  • Folder Marker changes folder icons from within a popup menu of the folders. To mark a folder, you don't even need to run the program! Moreover, you can customize the popup menu for your own needs
  • Folder Marker Pro can change the Network folder icon. So you can customize your LAN
  • With Folder Marker you also have two additional options for folder icon changes: "Make customized folder distributable" (portable) and "Apply selected icon to all subfolders"
  • Folder Marker's menu can contain convenient category submenus.
  • Folder Marker contains a User's Icons tab. Add your favorite icons and mark folders with them. It's easy!
  • Folder Marker can work with several folders at once
  • Folder Marker can assign an icon to a folder from: ICO, ICL, EXE, DLL, CPL or BMP file
  • Folder Marker supports 32-bits icons

and

  • Folder Marker can change the icons of ALL folders in your system. This is the favorite feature of customization lovers. Get rid of monotony! Make your folders your own!

And what's more - Folder Marker has a FREE edition with basic functions!

I'm sorry I was short in my last post. Woke up on the wrong sign of the bed, literally.

I found this Freeware, in English, by a very proud Polish programmer; please be nice to him. It allows you to change the color of your folders.

I've checked the ZIP file with Clamwin and it came up clean, and I scan twice per day.

This has a very nice GUI and the installation is <next>, <next>, <next> till it's done. Very fast installation.

The only idiosyncrasy is that it puts the Rainbow Folders EXE file into the <Users><Start menu> Folder. Once you find it, create a shortcut and paste it on you desktop.

Click on the link above. The Website is in English. Select "Rainbow Folders" and download. Bookmark the page and, if you like it, send him a 'thank you'.
