abs brakes that don't stop the car

11/17/2008 7:51 PM

my 1998 dodge grand caravan awd has abs brakes that don't stop the car, the peddle jumps back or the peddle doesn't even let you push it down even at 5 mph needless to say you can't stop. Someone told me they had the same problem and disabled the abs then no more problems stopping. What do I do?

It sounds like the problem only exists when the ABS is active? If this is the case and the car stops normally during regular driving then it sounds like you need a new ABS module. One of the seals are likely blown out. You could just disable the ABS but in an emergency you would have poor braking performance.

Personally, with the problem as you described...

I would be heading, Slowly and Carefully, to the nearest Brake Speciallist.

At that low of a speed, the ABS is not functioning. If you can't push the pedal down, try this. Withe the engine off, push the brake pedal down and up ten times. At this time hold the brake down, and start the car. If the pedal goes down when the power brake booster seems to be working. If not, check for vacuum at the booster. Good luck.

Bob C proves again why he is a guru!

Malfunctioning ABS looks more like "Pedal feels normal without full brake effect". Known as limp mode, for how you should go home, not how well it works.

Gotta say, I don't know how they ever installed ABS with the crappy failure modes it has. I'm a huge fan when it is working, but the failure modes (not all detectable) will seriously get you killed.

Thank you for the kind words. Now if I could only get better at proof reading.
