Capacitor Bank maintenance

11/18/2008 1:24 AM

Dear All,

What steps needs to be carried out during the preventive maintenance of capacitor banks? What should be the periodic difference at which the maintenance should be carried out?

What is the best way to check the various capacitors (three phase) connected in the bank are not weak.

Reading the current to each capacitor phase is a good way to identify sections that have lost capacitive elements. Have a competent electrician use the properly rated clamp meter.

The current in each capacitor phase should be the bank KVAR / (L-L Volt) / 1.73 * 1000

Allow for a +/-10% variation.

The time between maintenance cycle depends on the site. If you have a lot of harmonics and or lightening strikes and or power failures, verifications on a monthly period is advisable. If you never see any change do it less often.

In addition to these checks recomended in 1 keeping the capacitor banks clean and dust free helps prenvent tracking between terminals. use a soft brush like a paint brush. and if neccessary a proprietry evaporitive cleaner such as CRC Contact Clean

Thanks to all..

But I think the use of capacitor banks (used with APFC relay) also induces harmonics into the system. So do we need to put in harmonics filter with capacitor banks?
