Structural Beam Question

10/16/2006 1:01 PM

I want to find a channel beam that when bolted back to back will have the same strength as a W8x58 wide flange beam. 9.25 inches is my maximum allowable height. I've found an "MC" channel, 9x25, but it comes up a little shy in Moment of Inertia. Does anybody know of a channel shape with wide flanges?

Sir, try redesigning using built up section, please try to integrate other materials into the section say adding an ms plate in between the section having the same height as the channel or if the design is restricted to a certain depth try reducing the depth of the channel and integrate a built up tee having a top flange width equal to t of web + 2xbreadth of channel and a depth of t of flange + d of channel totalling to the desired depth, if ever i encountered such situation i always resort to built up section.

Sir, try using built up section, you can design a channel using A36 MS Plate, or if not try using built up I section, anyway a 2-MC Channels back to back resembles an I -beam, for longer span just provide web stiffener to counter web crippling and just make sure the welding is done by a certified structural welder (built up is much cheaper than a rolled up section), i use multiframe section maker in doing so..
