Aligning a Single-Bearing Alternator and Engine

11/19/2008 11:03 PM

I am not a mechanical engineer, and hence the question...

What is the best procedure for alignment of a single bearing alternator with engine in a generator to ensure that air gap between stator and rotor is uniform.

cheers.

In a simple way, I'd use shims betweens the parts during installation/assembly and then remove it after final position is obtained... if access is possible, of course.

Hi,

Please help me in mounting a small size single bearing permanent magnet alternator (5 KVA) with diesel engine.

I want to bolt this alternator directly on the engine side and other side over hanging. My concern is whether i'ld be able to maintain the alignment or not. Because of overhanging part, concentricity would be disturbed.

If anyone can suggest best possible solution to mount and maintain concentricity as well as alignment.

Thanks,

Yogesh

Hi,

To get a better response to your question, post it as a question rather than a reply to an existing thread as here only a couple people will see it.

Post in either General or Mechanical

If possible please add more information like engine and generator mfg and model or possibly a drawing. The better your information, the better your response will be.

Regards,

Tim

The shim idea works well if that's as close as you need to be. On EMD style generators (AB 20) yo may remove the front covers and use a dial indicator to achieve a perfect allignment.

It realy depends on your tools avalible on site, and certainly the particular type of generator end.

Send a description and or a photo of your application for a specific solution.

Most generators and their drive units are pinned so as to be self aligning unless you done something to cause deformantion of the engine or generator (pretty dificult to do) just bolt them back together.

My suggestion . If we take the TIR ( Total indiactor runout ) of the flywheel housing . This will also give you a perfect alignment as well alternator uniform air gap between exciter rotor and stator .

Base frame also must be checked is in one water level . Otherwise there may be a vibration issue and frequently disc broken issue will occur .
