2004 Chevy Impala - Sound from ABS/ Traction Control

11/20/2008 8:05 AM

I have Impala 2004 with ABS and traction control. Sometimes when I start moving and had to turn full just at start I do hear TRRRRRRRRRR noice fron the front Axles and TC light cones on soonest I straight up it goes off. Also I had noticed that yesterday In snow I had to brake hard and I do hear sound from ABS and Car took bit longer to stop but no side skidding. Is this normal? If a problem what it could be and cost of fixing.

Thanks

Your has a recall for that steering description:

Bulletin #010232001F / Sequence # 10019516 / Date 02-01-06

And several recalls concerning ABS

Taking longer to stop in less than optimal traction conditions is the way to avoid skids, seems the ABS is functioning.

SO I should Google "tsb Chevrolet/Corvair/1964".

Google replies with information similar to #1.

Entering THOSE numbers will get me the information.

That makes more sense. Thank you

In reality, I have never owned a Corvair in my life. Although it would be tempting to restore one for the fun of it.

If it is "Unsafe at any Speed", what about backwards? I guess I will have to ask Ralph Nader about that.

Sincerely

Actually I've driven a few and thought they were great just like the CJ5 jeep I owned, I gave it good reason to roll several times but I guess it was defective

The Trrrrrrrr noise could also be your limited slip differentials. My cousins vehicle (has three) starts doing this when the tires rotate at different speeds. Took a while to figure out what was going on.

The ASB monitors wheel speed and may be not registering the steering at start up. While not a problem as of yet, it could have unexpected issues. Not my area of expertise but I would check into it.

either your wiring harnass is bad or the hub assembly needs to be replaced, because worm wheel bearings causing the sensors to go of alignment. The Mini computer monitor the sending device twheel rotation information with the which the computer compare wheel rotation for the ABS info.

Ask your Chevy dealer to check play in the hub next time your cars in for a Oil change.

How many miles are on the car? I replaced mine at 204,000 miles had the noise for at least 50,000 miles before I replaced it.

My 2004 Impala had the same thing, either your wiring harnass to the ABS sensors are bad, or the whole hub assembly needs to be replaced, years ago we use to replace wheel bearings, now we have to change the whole hub, as the bearings wear, it allows the assembly to go out of alignment, causing the sensors to give false rotation information to the computer, which monitoring wheel rotation information with the which the computer compare wheel rotation for the ABS info.

It could be a combination of things. Usually the dealers or local mechanic will recommend a total wheel hub change. But it could be either that, bad wire harness, or even ABS speed sensors. Though my impala did that trrrrr noise thing and i replaced the two front hubs (Timkin), it didnt stop so i took it to the dealer. All they did was unplug and clean the switch that connects the ABS to the sensors and reset it. They said before they cleaned it the computer showed some codes faults but after they cleaned it, no faulty code was visible. The TC stopped showing and so far my car has been driving fine. But that little job they did cost me $100. My recommendation to anyone going through this is not to rush and change your hubs till you are positive that the wheel hubs are bad. Till then, look for minor problems like eroded wires/harness, poor contact due to dirt in switch or bad ABS sensors.
