Wire Gauge

What is this SWG, AWG etc. of wires? Is there any relation for this indication to thickness of wires? If so, how it is related? I think gauge is something related to pressure!!!

SWG=Standard wire gauge

AWG=American wire gauge

Yes they are directly related to the thickness of the wire

1GA=.300 inch wheras 12GA=.1040 inch smaller gauge number the thicker the wire.

It has everything to do with wire thickness.

Hi...in commonweath countries you'll find some workmen mixing up BG & SWG. BG stands for Brimingham Guage and it measures sheet metal thickness whereas SWG is to be used to check & specify wire diameters. There is some difference between both these guages.

By time delay I mean the time elapsed from the thread is posted till I receive it. Sometimes, I've been the original poster and I've receive notifications of some answers before the daily digest in which has been included.

Gage in shotguns is a different matter entirely. In shotguns the gage is the bore size. If I can express this properly a 12 GA bore is a bore size for which 12 balls (spheres) of lead of that diameter will weigh 1 lb. 20 gage means that 20 balls that size will weigh 1 lb. 16 ga... so for shotguns larger gage numbers mean smaller bore. The one exception is the 410 which is .41 inch bore. The shot size or size of projectile is another matter shot guns fire shot which is traditionally many small lead balls with each shot ranging from #9 which is about the size of the head on a straight pin to BB size (0.17 inch) or even larger some even use rifled slugs which are roughly cylindrical and fir the bore with little webs which impart a spin to the slug...

Absolutely, thank the French, for the Metric system. But, as long as you are working using one system, the comparisons are obvious. It is when trying to compare the different standards it gets tricky!

There can often be a situation where you get two different gauges which are the same strength. That is because some is annealed, and treated in other ways which alter its strength and flexibility and braking point. I think that is why there is so many gauges which at first sight seems to be unnecessary?
