Usually SS316L is used 'cause has lower problem during welding. The L means that the carbon content is below 0.03% while for SS316 the carbon content is below 0.08%. This means that there is low or nill possibility of carbide precipitation and following intergranular corrosion. Intergranular corrosion can be a problem in corrosive environments. If u don't have any possibility of corrosion then also the SS316 can be used.
