11/22/2008 5:27 AM

Dear Sir, This is a very good place I found to know about the instrumentation and many other topics. I wanted to when to use different type of level transmitter. I work in a organization who is local distributor of Ametek Drexelbrook and ametek is a manufacturer of Ultrasonic, Radar, RF type level measurement equipment (both point and continuous level). What I wanted to know is when to use these type of level transmitter. like when we can use ultrasonic type and when we can use RF type etc. Kindly please answer the question with proper refernce(if available) Thank you, XPIKON

Hi there,

Firstly you would generate a data sheet and get the process data from the chemical engineer. You are particularly interested in whether the liquid is single or multi phase. Is their foaming. Is the liquid being agitated etc etc etc.

From the above mentioned process data you would be able to determine the correct type of level instrument to use. This might not be an ultrasonic or radar meter at all but it might be a displacer in a still well.

As a rough rule of thumb you can go by the following.

If there is foaming and you don't want to measure the foam - Ultrasonic

Waterlike slurries - Radar

Solids(Powder) - Radar

Conductive liquids - Radar/Ultrasonic

Insulating liquids - Ultrasonic

This is a very rough guide as there are many more types of meter out there. You really need the process data to make the correct choice.

Good luck

Craig
