Scientists Say Sunshine May Prevent Cancer

05/23/2005 11:06 AM

Scientists are now saying that 15 minutes in the sun without sunscreen may actually help prevent cancer by producing more Vitamin D.

I think their point was just 15 minutes helps produce the Vitamin D your body needs going out and "getting golden" will actually increase your risk for cancer. Finding the balance between the two is very important. And a very thin line.

I wonder how many people will read this news and so sans sunscreen all summer and bake saying "It's good for you!"

Unfortunately people tend not to read through an entire article. I think my going to the car, and running around during the day gives me enough exposure to the sun. Mom is from the age of throwing your children in the sun to bake. It took 50 years but she suffers for it now with skin cancer.

I wonder if they figured out how much skin needs to be exposed for that 15 min. I do agree that driving around without sunscreen should be enough for most people though. I don't know too many people who slather on sunscreen before driving. (Other than truck drivers.)

Yeah, are we talking 15 minutes of total body coverage, or simply the parts that are normally exposed - arms, face and sometimes legs? Me, I'm not very good with the sunscreen in my general day-to-day. I do use it extensively while hiking, a the beach or doing yardwork, though.

Cod Liver Oil

Those who dislike the sun can get their Vitamin D from an old, New England home remedy - cod liver oil. Personally, I'd rather spend a day at the beach.

Don't they also put it in milk? I thought it helped to synthesize calcium.

Almost all milk produced in the US is fortified with vitamins A & D.

Interestingly, a new study suggests that drinking a substantial amount of milk may lead to better health - and no, I do not work for the Milk Council.

So you are saying they have independently verified that milk does indeed do a body good....
