Thrust bearings in rotating equipment are used quite extensively to facilitate thermal growth. Typically on a shaft you will find one locked, thrust bearing and the second bearing will be of floating style - then when the shaft expands, there is no undue axial stress between the bearings (this stress can be VERY high with restrained thermal growth).
It is hard to give you an exact answer with your turbine/compressor without knowing the style/model/lay-out/configuration.
