Thrust is the force acting on a body in a direction parallel to the axis of the body

The axis can eith be axis of rotation [if the body is rotating] or axis about the pivot/support of the body [for non-rotating body]

One example is in a centrifugal pump. The pressure behind the impeller is greater than the pressure in front of it so the impeller wants to move towards the suction piping. This force must be resisted by an opposite force by a thrust bearing.
