Water leak detection in electrical cabinet

11/28/2008 10:10 AM

Good morning gentleman.

I am looking for a reliable water leak detection device to use in our industrial electrical cabinets. I have found a few on the net but think that most will not last many years.

While the ambient conditions are not too extreme, I don't want a small gizmos that will cause false alarms because of a little bit of dearth accumulating here and there.

I would prefer a detector that gives a dry contact as a signal. We have 24VDC to power the sensor and could use 120VAC if needed. No battery operated or RF devices please.

The sensor will be placed at the bottom of the electrical cabinet where water could accumulate. The cabinets are sometimes made of stainless steel therefore the sensor must work on a conductive surface.

Finally, it has to look and feel industrial.

Anybody with a good candidate to suggest?

Thank you.

Two possibilities,

1 Detection of the water by resistance. We find that reliable but we are normally dealing with saline

2 Capacitive detection. Add a sponge to the face of a capacitive proximity sensor which is facing the bottom surface of the cabinet. If water accumulates it will absorb into the sponge and trigger a response.

Good luck

I am looking for a reliable water leak detection device

Rather than a detector.....remove moisture by supplying refrigerated dehydrated dedicated air supply to remove it as it accumulates transferring "water" to refrigerator condensate outside the critical area.

We did similar thing by measuring the temperature change of a small galvanized steel plate where the water would accumulate. It will work well fine if you can keep the collector plate at a relatively steady temp. We mounted several of these collectors as we had quite a large surface to protect, using solid-state temperature sensors. RH sensors will work very well also. as if you can adjust your alarm state to nearly or at 100%.

For long term reliability and freedom from false alarms you can't beat a tethered float with tilt switch sealed inside. The drawback is that it will require a high enough liquid level to actually tilt the float. If you can place it in a sump, the liquid level is less of a problem.

Thank you everyone,

Two good answers could be usable if I wanted to build my own but I was looking for suggestions on already existing products.

I will keep looking for a suitable manufacturer.

Well Marcot, you can use ceiling guard for leak detection. It will surely benefit you in detection, as soon as it encounters a water drop it will notify you.
