Trip current - purpose!!!!

11/28/2008 11:27 PM

Hi,

Fresh day to everybody !!!

What is the purpose of setting a trip current while applying the Highvoltage to the transformer.

And also is there any relation b/w the trip current & leakage current.

Hope to get the fast response to clear my doubts...

Hari

Dear Hari,

Trip current setting will be safety for the electrical instrument.

It is a safety measure to limit the current to which the transformer is exposed; primarily to limit the fault current in the event of insulation puncture, flashover, excessive leakage current, or other failure. The trip current setting protects the device being tested as well as the source.

Hi Haricool,

Trip current is the maximum current that the breaker will allow to flow before tripping or opening up the circuit. The Leakage current is the measurement of current between a line and a non-conductor point. The current should always flow between the Lines or Line to Nuetral but depening upon system design and impurities in the construction materials it is possible to get current flow between other points besides L-L and L-N any other points conducting current would be considered leakage current.

trip current is the insulator failure (current between any live conductor to a conducting media- another conductor RBYN or the the body (Earth) The leakage current is when no insulator has failed, but the current is flowing due to low Insulator resistance- caused by faulty insulator or by contaminated resin/ insulation fibers.
