Help me find a high temperature resistant heat insulator

11/29/2008 12:21 AM

I am trying to design a furnace heated by concentrated sunlight, but I got a problem on what kind of material is most appropriate to serve as walls for the furnace to prevent dissipation of heat while waiting to increase the temperature being accumulated from the incoming solar heat or sunlight.

Please provide suggestions for a heat insulator that does not wear out.

Thank you so much.

Hello gaudencio labrador:

Can you tell me how big the furnace will be and will it have a conventional 'pot'?

And, what will you be melting in the furnace? Or have I got the wrong idea?

Try water based Zirconium rich refractory compound brush or spray applied on inner side of refreactory, as barrier against low and high heat up to 1500 deg C.

Hi babybear,

I'm looking for a high temperature resistant heat insulator.

Temperature range; higher the better (200Celsius or better) but heat insulation is even more important.

Hi,

commercial furnaces use silica and alumina fiberboard in high temperature applications with fast heating and cooling.

For cheap trials I would try vermiculite (expanded mica) to be glued by potassium-silicate.

If you know a precision casting shop you can get there a fluid made by Monsanto as "Syton". This is colloidal silicic acid so after firing much more temperature resistant than ordinary silicates. (It is converted to quartz-glass after firing to above 1200°C, if lower than soften and some water included.)

"Wear out": if mechanical abrasion or deformation is an issue then use stainless steel as shielding, at higher temperature nimonic or nickel, if even higher use molybdenum.

Please report what you tried and what you achieved.

Greetings.

Try rock wool in batts.

If I remember right it is good up to 1800 degrees F.

It is usually available in building supply stores.

This is what I am using in the boiler that I am making.

I'd like to add to BB's excellent list above with Kaowool:

https://secure.anvilfire.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=Kaowool+blanks

and you can buy it here in small quantities.

Hello Bricky,

Thanks for your remarks. I do my best. I have not heard of kaowool before.

GA to you

Re: Help me find a high temperature resistant heat insulator

I made my glass furnace form 2600 degrees F fire brick with a coating of ITC 213 which adds a hard reflective coating to the inside of the furnace. For doors, floor and places of high wear I use a 90% alumina refractory that is nearly indestructible at 2200 degrees F. I use a brand called Ram 90 or Spar 90. behind the fire brick I use 6" of 3000 degree F Kao wool made by Thermal Ceramics Co. All of this is contained in an outer shell of 36" 304L stainless steel pipe 1/4" thick. I use and abuse this furnace and leave it over 2000 degrees F for weeks at a time. I am constantly opening the door to gather glass and shocking the inside with cold air and it has stayed together very well. You can contact Thermal Ceramics co. and get most any type of refractory you desire and also check the web for ITC 213 which is a very good ceramic coating. If you need something super durable I would suggest at least 1" of high alumina refractory for the inside and either an insulating refractory such as at least 2600 degree F castable , firebrick or Kao wool for 6" or more behind that. I build small glass furnaces every now and again for other glassblowers and I would not let one out without the ITC coating on all the inside surfaces it is just that good of a product in my opinion.

a high temperature resistant heat insulator,it must be graphite material which is most appropriate to serve as walls for the furnace to prevent dissipation of heat.here is the example graphite used in Vacuum Furnace. visit http://www.xrdcarbon.com/products/graphite_carbon_machining/vacuum_furnace_graphite_parts/ ,hope it helps!
