One way to accomplish this would be to use te Windows system as your "main" system (i.e.: the one attached to your broadband connection) and set up "Internet Connection Sharing" on the Windows box.

I'll have to get back to you re: MacOS as the main system...

You need to set up an ad-hoc network using the Windows system, then connect to it wireless with the Mac. (Not sure if it can be done the other way)

To set up an ad-hoc network on Windows XP:

  1. Start -> Control Panel
  2. Network Connections
  3. Right Click the Wireless connection and select properties
  4. Click Advanced
  5. Select "Only connect to peer to peer networks"
  6. Then add a new connection
  7. Name your peer to peer network
  8. Add a password if you want
  9. Make sure at the bottom of the window you select this is a peer to peer network
  10. Ok out of all the windows

Now you should be able to connect to this network with both computers (wireless) and if you have a wired broadband connection then the internet connection will be shared.

How is your broadband connection connected to your macbook? (wired? wireless?)

I googled "share internet connection" and had a lot of hits. This is the first link: http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/

This explains how to use internet connection sharing (ICS) using windows XP.

Whether you can use the WiFi on a Mac to connect to another computer and connect to the internet through a peer to peer network without a router I don't really know but it seems as though this should be possible theoretically as long as you have an ethernet connection to your internet and a wireless adapter installed in your windows XP machine. I may be wrong...

I am assuming though that what you really want is for the macbook to be your server? Is your hp laptop an older computer?

This whole process would be much easier if you could obtain a gateway router from your ISP and just set up a wireless network for both laptops to access the internet through.
