Encoders and Resolvers - What are the Differences?

What is the difference between a resolver and an encoder in terms of working, applications,resolution, inputs/outputs and cost?

Resolvers tend to be very rugged and are used in environmentally difficult situations.

Encoders generally have better resolution but are not as mechanically robust. (Absolute) encoders can report position without homing which resolvers cannot do.

What processor speed is needed be able to use the electrical signal?
