Interchangeable Cylinder to Plate Connection

12/02/2008 3:00 PM

I'm designing something where i need to be able to change out a piece which shall be connected to a cylinder (rod end with flat 4 hole mount) Via a quick disconnect device (the device in question). I need to be able to simply pull a pin remove the piece, slide on a new piece, lock into place, and continue running the machine. There will be minimal loads on the connection. and the removable piece will be a simple flat plate. My current thought process first went to a dovetail slide type of connection with indent pin. I have also looked into some linear slide bearing (carriage/rail type) which could be modified to work. I don't want to over-complicate things, and seem to be looking at the problem with tunnel vision. I've already started down my dovetail path, but just don't want to miss out on another set of mind's, alternative ideas. I don't want to overlook a very simple option, and am wondering if someone might be able to think of something outside of my box which could be taken into consideration.

Thank you.

Hi,

What is the size of cylinder (bore x stroke), air pressure or desired output force, and is there side loading? Can you describe the application a little better?

Thanks,

Gren

bore/stroke/psi/output force are irrelevant. there is no side loading, forces are so minimal they are negligible. To simplify things even more, I'm just looking for a creative way to mate two small plates together using a locking(in place) quick release device. my first (and still only) thought is a small (3"x2.5") aluminum dovetail slide with locking pin. any creative ideas are welcome and greatly appreciated.

"a dovetail slide type of connection with indent pin."

I used to buy just such an item from GCX Corp. (www.gcx.com), but don't have the part number at hand, and can't readily find it on their site. If you can contact them and ask, it shouldn't be hard to find; I recall the insert plate as being about 2" (50mm) square; we had a version that permitted installation in three of the possible four orientations. This was deliberate, as use of our product in the fourth position could have lead to accidental dropping from the mount.

Well, you asked for a creative solution, so I was researching standard rod threads that might interface with the female end connection of a Hansen Quick Coupler to use as a cheap tool changer. (that's why I wanted to know the bore size). You could pick up a set for under $10. I've never seen them used like this, but it would certainly work. www.tuthill.com. Good luck. Gren

Thank you very much. Unfortunately the cylinder is a non-rotating cylinder, and ony has a four bolt flat plate style connection. The attachement piece must also not be allowed to rotate.

Again, thank you for the input
