Mixing Heating Oil with Used Cooking Oil

12/08/2008 5:31 PM

A friend of mine can get 8 gallons a week of fairly clean oil from his restaurant. I was wondering how easily I could filter this and mix it. What I'm really looking for I guess is the maximum amount I can use without getting a heater.

I have never done this, so take my advice as this is what I have heard but not what I have done. I have heard a max of 20% although I think that is a bit high.

A big word of warning, if you mix heating oil with vegetable oil you will need to do this in a clean tank, and mix it very well. If you just dump the oil in your main heating oil tank and mix it, it will pick up all the dirt on the bottom of the tank and continually clog the filter and nozzle.

I would also recommend doing this in a separate tank so that if you put too much vegetable in, you can dilute it and you will still have HH oil to heat your home. I also imagine each burner is a little different so start with a low % and work you way up to see what happens.

Alternatively if you have the oil and want to really get into a project, just convert a burner (get a spare) and your boiler to run on 100% vegetable oil.

Ok, so perhaps it would be best to collect the oil, let it sit and settle itself, and add it when the tank is refilled. I don't pay for the heating oil, I'm just trying to gain some useful knowledge that might come real handy some day. My roomate might not find 20% worth the trouble and may not want to risk clogging anything.

100% would be the way to go, but I probably won't go through with the work to do it to someone else's house. Thanks for the link.

I don't know if you read what I said, but I highly recommend, you DO NOT ADD IT TO THE MAIN TANK AT ANY TIME, refill or otherwise.

Oh, I assumed the born dirt was just from the physical disturbance, is it because of a chemical difference?

Since I have not mixed HHO and WVO my self as I use 100% WVO, I can't say exactly why. I have been told, its not the physical disturbance, the WVO acts as cleaner of sorts and grab the dirt. So don't mix them in the main tank or you will likely go through many many oil filters and clogs before you get your system to run again.

You got to heat it. There is a gel stuff, I am too tired right now to look up, that will come from the oil that will cause a lot of probelms in a heater. Plus the gel stuff sells for a lot of money they use it in womens makeup.
