Christmas LED Light Show

12/09/2008 5:36 PM

Hi all. I have become fascinated with wanting to make a Christmas LED light show (yeah I know...i'm probably way too late for '08). I have seen some amazing videos on youtube (like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szLmAPW39uE&feature=related) and was wondering where do i even start looking for info on how to learn and do this type of thing. Does anyone here have any ideas? I'm guessing that it probably is software driven, but which? How is the software interfaced with the hardware? I don't even know what to google. Any help would be much appreciated.

p.s. I'm a little embarrased as i am an engineer that has been out of the design game for a while now...darn you management.

I hate to send you to another blog site, as CR4 is a damn good one, but in this case I am compelled to provide a few links. For starters a good place for information is http://computerchristmas.com/ there you will find many things to help you. Some software and hardware that may also be of interest to you since its free is http://www.vixenlights.com/ , http://www.electro-zone.co.uk/icicle/index.php and http://www.rgbled.org/RGBLED/index.html as well as a section from my own blog here on CR4 which I also have a driver for that works with the vixen software above.

The real question is how much do you want to make yourself vs buy, and how much do you want to spend.

Hi Daffy

Go to Picaxe.com (rev ed ) and order a picaxe controller board 28x or 18x with the controller chip and driver chip there is a US supplier . Each can control 8 outputs so at 6V thats 8 strings of leds with appropriate resistors if needed (depends on colour and number). Dowload the free software and start programming. Its easy I just bought a string of 20 leds including 5 blue from the pound shop and cut them up to make a flashing star with complex sequence. Its fun too.

Hello daffy, if you are into scratch building from bare parts dig around on this site. A lot of amateur stuff but some very good info also. http://www.instructables.com/id/Animated_Christmas_LED_Snowflake_Window_Decoration/

Just search LEDs and much more is available.
