What is in a name as related to a profession.

12/09/2008 5:39 PM

I have to give a little background on this. And I do not mean it to degrade professions or surnames, but for the most part it may come off sounding like it.

I was driving into work this morning, and the local radio station had a contest the 20th caller would get free tickets to a show or concert at the theater that's playing.

The radio announcer told the 20th caller she's the winner. And asked what she was doing today.

Her reply was she and her husband was going to the doctor for a vasectomy consultation.

All 3 radio announcers never expected that reply. They talk to her and asked to talk to the husband, for which he was very responsive to. (After all she did win the tickets)

Then one of the announcers asked if it was Dr. Mc Nut that they were consulting with. The others thought that was a joke but the announcer said that he was one of the specialist in that area, and also a very good one. Of course one of the radio announcers (who was the clown of them) asked if his first name was Richard… well you understand where that was going.

But that's what got me thinking about names occupations, and addresses, and how they can be construed to stereotyping or related to the occupation, by coincidences or chance.

So that's the first one, Dr. Mc Nut whose specialty is vasectomy's.

A simuliar note, In Green Bay, Wisconsin, there's a street called Crooks Street. And guess what businesses are established there. Well I'll give you a hint another name it could be called is "Attorney's Row". I think its fitting, but then again. I don't hold most attorneys in high esteem.

I was just wondering has any CR4 members met or worked with colleagues or knew of anybody that their names are somewhat related to their profession.

My children's pediatrician in Houston was Dr. Payne... Not a good name for a doctor...

My mother went into nursing. Her maiden name was Payne.

Came across a doctor named Emmitt (Emit) Payne.

"Paging Doctor Payne... Doctor Payne to the Emergency Room."

In my undergraduate days, the anatomy professors who ran the cadaver lab were Dr Grimm and Dr. Graves.

In my National Guard unit, we had a motor sergeant named Kenneth Gass. We also had a Capt. Looney, but he was a good officer.

The mention of Dr. Payne reminded me of an episode from my youth. While on the way to visit relatives in Wichita, my brothers and I started moaning like we had just become sick. We had just seen a sign saying that we were entering Payne County. Mom was not amused!

My wife was referred to an OB/GYN named Dr. Virgin. His standard joke when he walked into his waiting room full of pregnant women was "Looks like I'm the only virgin here."

At the water supply department of our local municipality is a guy by the name of Mr Fawcett. A supplier in the packaging industry is named Mr Bagley. The best is the name of our local fire chief; Mr Van Vuuren ("vuur" is the Afrikaans word for fire).

I remember a surgery in Portsmouth that had a name plate outside for Dr D'eath (I bet he added the apostrophe). We have a local Dyno Rod company run by M. T. Drain. My favourite is totally made up, we live in 1066 country, battle of Hastings & all that, the local firm that turns up to mix your concrete on site is 'William the concreter'.

Some years ago, we took our pets, when needed, to a vet named Dr. Quack.

His practice was in Central NJ, USA.

Couldn't resist adding this to the list.

When I was at Elk Grove High School (IL) in the mid 70's, the Mechanical Industrial Art teacher was Mr. DeBolt and the Electrical Industrial Art teacher was Mr. Ohm.

I had a friend who decided against dentistry as a profession. His name was D. Kah (pronounced Decay). He felt Dr. Decay wouldn't be an appropriate name for a dentist.

He should have changed his name, and gone into dentistry anyway. Then only those who knew him before would know of his former name. Of course, when his Mother told his wife about it, she would forever after no him as De-D.Kah, DD.

Couldn't resist. I apologize. Repent, repent, repe .. snicker, snicker, guffaw whoop haw haw haw.

There's a great compilation by John Train (John Train's Book of Remarkable Names). Here is a mention, stolen from Culture Shock Online (http://www.cultureschlockonline.com/Articles/names.html):

Then there are those funny names that just happen to coincide with what the child grows up to be. Is this coincidence or self-fulfilling prophecy? Perhaps only their hairdresser knows for sure, but consider the following anyway: Mr. Vroom, motor cycle dealer of Port Elizabeth, South Africa; Dr. Zoltan Ovary, gynecologist, New York Hospital; Wyre and Tapping, detectives, New York City; Ronald Supena, lawyer; Mrs. Screech, singing teacher, Victoria, British Columbia; Mr. Bloom, horticulturist; Lawless and Lynch, attorneys from Jamaica, New York; the Katz Pajama Company, New York City; Climax Underwear Company of Cincinatti, Ohio; Cardinal Sin, Archbishop of Manila, Philippines and last but not least, A. Moron, Commissioner of Education in The Virgin Islands.
I once dealt regularly with Mr. Fred Banker, I believe then a VP at Winters Bank in Dayton, Ohio - same family as Jonathan Winters, the comedian. My recollection is that John Train mentions Iccolo Miccolo, a musician who played . . . yes, that's right, wait for it: piccolo . . . for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.

My basic training company at Ft. Leonard Wood MO had a Drill Sergeant Belt. For those that don't know, drill sergeants wear as part of their uniform a web belt with a special buckle. Plus, drill sergeants were known to belt an uncooperative trainee at times.
