12/10/2008 9:25 AM

How can we predict the damage of gears/bearings and what are the best precautions for such problem?

You could have a thermal survey done!

Airborne ultrasound -

It is one type of ultrasound that has practical applications in the energy management and maintenance programs. This sound waves are low energy and have short wavelengths making them easy to locate with an excellent detector and knowledgeable inspector.

There is lot of information available on net. Just try google.

Bearing manufacturers as SKF or FAG have ready to use devices which measure and analyse emitted noise. Due to a huge volume of measurements they can determine the condition of the bearing. Same principle can be used to obtain inpuy about wear evolution of gears. Analysis considers amplitudes and frequencies based on a FFT data processing.
