Rats

Why do rats like to eat electrical wiring. I have a problem of rats eating the wiring and insulation under the hood of my car. How do I solve this problem?

Rat poison was the first thought, but I'm restricted by the places I can place bait (Decon) due to pets, children, etc. I can place bait trays in my shop because no one except me uses it and I control access. The car is a different matter. The innards under the hood doesn't lend itself well as a location for poison bait trays. I can't put the tray under the car because the pets will get to it. Any other suggestions?

A mouse trap may also be helpful...

I have problems with rats too. They costed me a water heater they loved to enter by the exhaust pipe. I have a constant stock of poison and periodically apply in key positions.
