The opening reinforcement calculation is spelled out pretty well and straightforward in ASME VIII Div 2 - Part 4.5.4 along with figure 4.5.1 and the nomenclature in 4.5.18.

The only advice I have is to make sure you are organized, neat, and thorough.

I have went through this many times and my advise is to spend the time to have your calculations very well laid out in an easy to understand format and checked to be correct before the auditors look at them. I used to do my on calculations in house but nowadays I find it much easier to have a 3rd party engineering co. do them and have their PE stamp and sign them before I review and check. It seems when I hire a 3rd. party co. to do them I always get them back very well done and in a format that is easy for the A.I. and myself as well to go over and check.

I think it is easier -especially at that tight and critical time- to proceed a computerized calculations by using a suitable software like PVElite, and this needs to modify the quality control manual to settle that statement. In addition to that, you have to prove that you had carried out such a verification for the soundness of that software. Otherwise, I recommend the suggest of our friend pipewelder to hire a PE to do that.

Note. I used to proceed a manual calculations for 1st audit and renewal of ASME VIII Div.1 Stamp U, since 1990. Because at that time I found a lot of mistakes at ready made softwares, in addition the ready made calculations was insufficient to cover all ASME requirements at that time.
