Eliminating Bubbles from a DI Water Bath

12/11/2008 8:38 AM

We have an ultrasonic test set in a DI water bath, lately we are forming tiny bubbles that cling to the bottom, sides and submersed components in the stainless steel tank. The bubbles do not form in 3 other similar systems. The bubbles interfere with the transducer readings.

Does anyone have ideas for getting rid of these bubbles.

I'm not sure if this http://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/30486/Adding-powder-to-hot-liquid-makes-it-boil-Why relates to what you are experiencing. If it does you might concider cleaning that tank.

You may be unintentionally creating conditions of reduced liquid pressure resulting in bubble formation. the Ultra-sound device may be operating out of spec. Just an off-the-cuff perspective

Hi,

Let the DI-water boil (under vacuum if you don't like to heat) for 10 minutes or let the ultrasound do the same for 15 minutes.

Dissolved air (or other gas) is hampering the cleaning effect of ultrasound by adding a minute amount of air to any steam bubble. This is slowing cavitation and softening the related impulse so cleaning is uneffective with water that contains air.

Boiling or ultrasounding for some time will remove this air. To prevent clinging to walls some surfactant will help. May be some polishing of the tank may help too.

Decrease surface tension. Use a surfactant to "soften water molecules)for this situation. You are forming bubbles

in part because of the surface treatment in the particular unit, was not controlled during manufacturing. Another complementary reason may be that you may have hard water. Lastly, ck the SS grade and make sure you have the same in all units.

If I can be of further help. feel free to contact me via dc8forever@yahoo.com

I do not mind helping at all.

Typical phenomena product of surface tensions and surface energy differentials.

Hello thepug,

Have you thought of using a wetting agent (surfactant). If it is possible with the ultra-sound. Depending on the size of the bath, you may only need a tiny amount?

Take care. Just a suggestion OK?

Have a happy holiday................

Hello thepug,

I think you will find this site helpful.

It sounds to me as if the ultrasonic treatment is producing tiny vacuum bubbles?

Have a read. http://www.hielscher.com/ultrasonics/degassing_01.htm

Take care, and good luck..................
