Wanted: Self-Cleaning pH Probes

12/11/2008 5:56 PM

Good Day,

I am looking for a self cleaning method for the pH probes in a waste water treatment system. The probes are clogged by algae and need to be cleaned twice a week using brush. Is there a proven method to automatically clean them.

Thanks in advance for your help.

What type of system is this? Biological, or industrial chemical? If it's the latter, adding a UV lamp may prevent algal growth. If it's the former, you'll just need to keep brushing, since anything that will kill the algae will also kill your beneficial bacteria.

This is the waste from semiconductor industry which uses all kinds of acid and base for the process. Is there any method using high pressure jet of water directed at the pH probe bulb at certain frequency. Can lowering the pH level to 3.5 once or twice a week would help.

We used to use an ultrasonic cleaner for pH probes used in a sugar mill. It was immersed with the pH probe and the vibrations kept the crud from sticking onto the probe. Worked reasonably well. That was decades ago though. 'Might still be available. Try googling for it.
