I'm getting tired of this!

12/13/2008 12:20 PM

I'm not getting tired of CR4, but I am getting tired of waiting for official answers to be posted to the Challenge Questions. The answers to the Rolling Rock and Wave Reflection were supposed to be posted on Dec. 2, and it's been close to 2 weeks since that day has passed.

I wonder why this is. I know the CR4 / Globalspec staff are busy people, but they should be tech savvy enough to use calendar programs to remind them to post the answers. They might even have a way to automate the process.

Maybe a question a week is too much to keep track of. How about two Challenge Questions a month, on the first and third weeks of the month? It might also make for a better use of server space and bandwidth.

A couple of times I have sent messages to Chris Leonard or the CQ blog admins about late answers. I don't want to become a self-appointed watchdog, especially if I'm the only one. Maybe if enough of us send them messages, they will perform a craniorectal autoextraction and start posting answers on time.

Anyone else have any ideas, thoughts or suggestions?

I agree that they need to post answers at promised times. There was one challenge about last month that I have been waiting for answers to and its still not posted. Actually, I think the best thing will be to have the answers already there with every challenge question and the user can only see the answer after they have posted a response. They won't be allowed to post anymore to the question after they have seen the answer and then at a promised date.everyone should be able to see the answers regardless...Just a thought!

I see your point, but it adds to the fun. People don't always agree with the answers anyway (especially that time the answer given was the question !). Maybe Chris and Co just want to check if anybody is paying attention. I'd like an automated answer to be posted, especially if it was only by PM to those who contributed to the discussion (please, nobody mention on-topic !). The whole timing of when answers are supposed to be posted seem a bit squiffy of recent. When Chris has/hasn't had a question from a member to post, perhaps his mind is elsewhere. Also they have to juggle the monthly Newsletter and weekly CR4 ones. I dunno, I'm just sucking-up.

Relax 3Doug, worse things happen at sea. If it consoles any, I've made the occasional comment about "where's the answer" on forum. "All good things" etc.

While I agree in it is poor professional form to not perform as one has stated, I also realize that we see only one aspect of their lives and other issues can take precedents over this forum.

With the undermining of our economies by the activities of the banks and others along with the personal issues of the holidays I'm sure they have their hands full doing their jobs and keeping CR4 on track

I have wanted to start a Forum on CR4 but do to too many sticks in the proverbial fire I haven't committed myself to the responsibility of maintaining that commitment. My needs are priority to my wants. So I tolerate more from others who have made commitments that are not a part of their needs.

My perspective

Brad

Well said Brad, however...

If you launch a thread by asking a question/discussion, I don't think that leaves you with a long term commitment to 'baby-sit' it. Honest, that's my opinion. By asking, you give others the opportunity for others to consider a topic. It's impossible to keep tabs/show the courtesy of reply to all. That would cause anyone a certain amount of angst, but ultimately if you post a topic called ' x'. and then move on, people can mail you , years later via PM if appropriate, or benefit from the discussion you started.

That's probably muddled (in my usual way), but 'go for it' if you have a question/subject you'd like to discuss. Even the most absurdly off-topic people, like myself, generally respect the intent of discussions that others have started. Any question or issue raised will benefit someone. Asking is often harder than saying, just take the leap - others must carry responsibility for how they interpret.

Hey Kris,

Actually I was thinking of something like Kate's Controversies on a different subject all together [ Politics ] in all aspects. Not enough time in the day for such a deep subject though.

My main issue is something UV mentioned. In business, when you say you are going to do something on a certain day, you should do it or present a valid reason why you didn't. Now, CR4 is primarily a discussion area for engineers and those in related professions, but it is provided courtesy of Globalspec, which is a business oriented website. And that means a certain degree of professionalism applies to CR4.

This issue with the late answers has been going on for some time, and not just due to the holidays and other factors. I can see it happening occasionally, but when it happens regularly, it could be a sign that something is going on that shouldn't be, something that could even become a real problem that could seriously affect the overall quality of CR4. That's why I suggested either automating the answer posting process, or reducing the number of challenge questions to a more manageable level.

I used to hang out quite a bit on a storm chaser website, even tho I am just a storm spotter. I went there to learn, and maybe sometimes to contribute a little in the areas where I could contribute, or offer a bit of humor at times. Those are the same reasons I have for coming to CR4. I stopped going to the storm chaser site because things did get a bit too lax, and then there was too much drama going on for my taste. I went there recently after a long absence, just to see if anything changed. Still too much drama. I don't want to see that happen to CR4, at least to the Challenge Questions blog.

I don't know why they did it, but the answers have been posted to the Rolling Rock and Wave Reflection threads were posted today. I am grateful, so thanks to the CR4 staff.

Now, lets see if the answer to the current thread gets posted on time.

Maybe I ought to remind them that Santa is watching, and they'll get coal in their stockings on Christmas morning? But then considering where the CR4 staff is located, they might not mind getting some free fuel.

Thanks for the update 3Doug, I'd nearly forgotten about the rock. Maybe they could mail all subscribers when an answer is posted ( or even better, let blog followers know when a new queestion is up - there seems to be some slight variance).

I must away to see the answer...........
