Power Supply System

12/15/2008 7:22 AM

sir,

i just want to know abt the power supply system of kerala.

Actually ,the main problem we are facing is the frequent voltage fluctuation .i just want to know ,

1) why there is a voltage fluctuation .... for eg : 5 fluctuation in 10 sec?

2) Is there any product in the industry which can rectify this problem?

since we are having higly sensitive circutes ......these small fluctuations are creating a huge problems for us.

hi,

More informations are required - what is your load? - at what voltage you receive power? - check your electrical system for any malfunction.

UPS can be a costly solution to get rid of voltage fluctuations.

Where is Kerala? What you are seeing is probably a loose connection. Does the voltage fluctuations occur through out you plant? Just in a small area? If its the whole plant, you can have a loose connection at the transformers or main switch. Its possible that the utility has the problem. You will need someone with electrical experience to track the problem down.

Hi Guest,

There can be many reasons for voltage fluctuation. In Kerala most of the electrical distributions lines in villages are by bare OH lines and the lines pass through thick green tree branches and coconut tree leaves . The branches/leaves come in contact with OH lines due to wind and this cause frequent voltage fluctuations. another reason is that most of the houses in villages are far away from the transformer and the loading on the transformer is un balanced as most of the domestic loading is single phase load. The loose contact on the connections are another possible reason which needs to be checked and corrected frequently by the KSEB staff which seldom happens . Get a KSEB chap to cut the branches near the oH lines and get the loose connections repaired.

Such voltage fluctuations will damage your costly electrical equipments. In such circumstances you must always use Constant voltage transformers (CVT)/ Voltage stabilisers which are available in the market to protect your valuable electrical equipments like TV ,refrigerator, and other electronic equipments from voltage fluctuations. But while purchasing these Voltage correcting equipments you must be carefull in buying only Good quality product as a bad corrector if functions erratically can be cause further unwanted damages.

Dear wareagle,

Kerala is a state of Indian Union situated in the south west corner of Indian Union. It is a beautiful land scape with one side sea and other mountains . If you travel 80 miles from sea shore you can reach top of High ranges which is called western ghats of India. This place is known as "Good's own country". If you get a chance you must visit this beautiful place at least once in life. it is great with its backwaters sea shore hill stations rain forests and coconut trees.

V.I.

Thank you for the information on Kerala. I did a google search and found the following: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/776581/kerala_gods_own_country/

It truly looks like a place I would like to visit.

Guest, from the information I can gather, the electrical systems in this beautiful place are seriously overloaded due to the lack of adequate transmission line facilities, and the seafood industrial facilities hungry for most of the available power 24/7.

The fluctuations you are describing are from load that is at or above what the system can supply reliably. A link that gives some detail. There is some hope since there is a 100 mW diesel genset in Brahmapuram, Kerala, and hopefully others on the way, but the lack of adequate electric power was called "a well-known national scandal" by one source.

Since you state that you have processes that are sensitive to and affected by these fluctuations and outages, I would suggest a battery based 'buffer between the source and yourself such as this used in photovoltaic and wind generation.

In addition to the stabilisers it may be prudent to use power conditioners which can Isolate your sensitive circuits from fluctuations .Most of them rectify and invert back the incoming supply.I have seen the rapid fluctuations when even a stabilizer is helpless.
