ss piping

Is it acceptable to use stainless steel piping in a domestic cold water application in Canada?

residential hi-rise , commercial

304L stainless

IMHO, there's no reason why not, subject to compliance with your local code-of-practice and approval from your local authorities of course.

I am allowed to use a stainless pump but not pipe.I don't understand this and am looking for the statement in the code . Or maybe this guy just wants to drive me nuts.

It is my understanding more than 40 states in the USA require (I guess in addition to meeting whatever other specifcations or codes etc. are applicable) that components like pipe that contact potable water be listed per e.g. NSF Standard 61. It could be Canada has at least in areas similar requirements. It is my understanding such listings are not just handed out based on perceptions etc., but now require some protocol, e.g. formulation reviews as well as some normalization/exposure etc. testing of the actual products etc. See e.g. http://www.nsf.org/business/newsroom/waterworks99-1/ . You might want to check if your pipe manufacturer has the required listings for the service.
