CNG Conversions for Dodge Trucks

12/15/2008 5:54 PM

I have rumors the Canadians have converted large V8 Dodge pickups to Compressed natural gas for years. But the kit just isn't legal in the U.S. Does anyone know if it is true? Are there ANY effective conversions for the 2004+ 5.7 liter engines? If not, is it a bureaucratic holdup or some design impediment?

Here's a list of approved conversions. I don't see Dodge on there.

Just an FYI, MSD Ignitions in El Paso Tx had a smaller subsid called Duel Curve that was their alternative fuels company. After MSD was bought out the new executives decided it wasn't that profitible, then. That being two years ago. The man in charge was since let go. Their biggest market was Mexico and Canada.

So to your answer. MSD has or is going to get back into that market. They still have a bunch of the Enco hard parts and they made the ECU adapters and complete metering electronics. 915-857-5200 is their number and ask for Todd Rydan, he should know where you can get answers now. There is, of course, stuff all over the net. I'm sure you'll find an outlet. I"ve not heard it to not be legal. Just that any modification of that sort should be done by a certified shop for that type of installation due to the legalities in certain states regarding emission equipment.

Good luck with that. I've installed those systems in the past and currently working on a true multi fuel system that includes the ability to use compressed natural gas as well as other fuels. I wont get into the upside or downside of the system your looking for at this time.

Hey Kahrdcarrier"

If you haven't already, go to Ebay and type in "CNG Conversion" . This might give you a starting point.

Best Regards

The best conversion for any Dodge is to let the CNG fill the cab and then toss a match.

It's not surpising to me that anyone is doing that. My dad was the service manager for a Ford in Kentucky for a number of years. The local CNG/Propane company used only Ford vehicles because to convert them did not void the warranty. He told me they were more responsive and the oil came out so clean it looked as if it had never been used.

Hello Kahrdcarrier,

I have a friend who drives a CNG powered '94 Dodge Minivan with (v6 engine). It was originally owned by a one of the utility companies. These were factory set ups. I don't see why there wouldn't have been pickups also. Conversion kits, on the other hand, may not be legal because your altering the emissions control systems.

As an aside, I made valve components for CNG fueling systems back in the '90s. I was told by the P/A that the end user was Chrysler.

if the conversion is not approved by the EPA, it's a $50,000 fine for installing it. You can buy a lot of gasoline for that. Besides. CNG fuel is more expensive per mile driven than diesel or gasoline, so why risk it.

There is a Dodge truck operating with CNG with over 600 000 miles on it in the Vancouver, Canada area. My GMC truck [5.7 litre] had a system installed by ECO Fuels. a US company. Dodge trucks were not a problem that i knew of. 1 kilogram of nat gas is energy equivalent to 1 1/2 litres of gasoline. therefore 5 kilos of cng is equal to 7 1/2 litres of gas. and will get you the same distance.4 litres of propane is equal to 3 litres gasoline.in my vehicle, the spark plugs were supposed to be 20% less gap than oem. good luck.
