Speaker refurb

12/16/2008 12:53 PM

Hi.

I have a pair of paper coned car speakers that are looking and sounding a bit tired. A few years ago I had a car with a similar problem and so I painted the paper cones with a slightly diluted PVA and improved the sound quality really well. Before I do this again is there anything as easily obtainable that would be better. Usually I would replace the pair but these are an oval shape that so far I've been unable to get.

Thanks Andy

Usually, it's the foam surround that goes bad on most modern speakers. Do these have foam surround? If they do, there are kits that have a new surround ring and the proper glue to install them, not sure if they would be available for oval though, they are sized for the most popular sizes and shape (which usually means round). Sorry I didn't give an answer on the PVA question.

Hi

They have a rubber surround and that is in very good condition. It's the paper cones on these that have gone very dry and fragile and this distorts the sound. I've just given them a couple of coats of pva slightly diluted with water to make it a little easier to paint. Once again it has worked well, giving the paper a plastic like finish and curing the distortion problems. :)

Thanks for the tip, I'll have to remember that. Where do you buy the PVA?
