Locating a Heavy Leak in a Drain Line

12/18/2008 8:52 PM

what equipment or method is used to locate exactly where a heavy leak is in a drain line installed and tested prior to pouring cement. I would like to limit the amount of flooring to be broken up?

Hello dallas67:

You do not give many details. However I have used food colouring to see where any leaks extend. You do not need any fancy electronics to do this, just careful and thought observation!

It sounds as if you have the pipe down and linked ready tp put the concrete? Have you done a pressure test? Or is it this test which indecated a leak?

Can you tell me in which country are you based please?

Take care and have a wonderful holiday.................

Hello Dave M.:

OK so you have a camera.

But you gave me no details I asked for. The food colouring die with show where any leaks, maybe into a water course is for sure! If you have more than one leak, try different colours like red and blue and yellow put in the drain at different places

Greetings Dallas67

I have used a compressed air hose(20 psi) inserted into drain lines under concrete.

listening to changes in sound as the air hose travels in the drain, I have been lucky to locate several leaks.

If you can put a pressure test on the line then use an audio probe it will give you a reasonably accurate location where the leak is.

thanks everyone for responding, by using the local water works equipment mobile inline camera system we were able to locate one union/coupling that had no evidence of glue. While looking in the line we made a copy of the film for evidence, we will cut the concrete and find out for certain.
