engine light on, on 2001 santa fe!

12/20/2008 5:49 PM

hi all i recently got a check engine light on my santa fe, after taking it to the dealer they checked the codes and toldme they were getting 1602,1203,1274. and quoteted me $2500 to have fixed, the original problem happened while driving in a lot of snow , when i was accelerating after stop the car was jerking and continued while driving . after stoping overnight, in the morning it didn't do it again i drove over 150 km and evrything seem to run o.k no jerking. i would like the oppinion of an expert as to how hard it is to do the repairs my self, or is there anything else to check that might be causing this, $2500 is a lot of money and i think they have screwed me before on the dealer, so basicaly i don't trust them

thank you for any suggestions

It sounds to me like you got moisture in one of the electrical connectors, probably at the transmission.

It is not unusual for a computer to throw out half a dozen codes, only one of which actually relates to the problem at hand. The rest of them coming from systems affected by the real problem.

Typically you should get the trouble indicator light reset and drive it again to see if it comes on again.

You can look under your car in the low hanging spots and see if there is some wiring you might have snagged.

I must say those don't look like code numbers I am used to seeing but I've been out of the biz since '93 and didn't do much with Toyota computers even then.

thank you shadetree for your quick response,i will look at the areas you suggested , apparently they told me that one of those codes relates to the transmision module beeing defective and it needed to be replaced at a cost of $1500 , but if it was defective wouldn't the problem persist? it stoped doing it after the car stayed idol overnight.

thank you again my friend

by the way those codes have the letter P in front, i forgot to put it.

The code that needs 1st attention would be p o1602.

Trouble code: P01602

Serial Communication Problem with the Transmission Control Module

Possible Causes:

* CAN network circuit open or shorted to ground

* CAN network circuit shorted to vref or system power (B+)

* TCM has failed

I would throughly check all wiring and plugs going to the transmission and I would unplug clean apply dielectric grease and reassemble the plug and see if this may clear the issues. You can get the codes erased at any AutoZone and see if they reappear. If they do find a mechanic that can read the DTC in the freeze frame mode and that can tell you what component is causing the problem by looking at the recorded data at the time that the code was set. Hope this will help and at least you will have more info for the repair shop to not lead you down the wrong path of repairs. Good Luck

Jim

I used to be in the car electronics aftermarket business and remember wiring Hyundias , they had the worst wiring and connectors i had ever seen . They are much better now ( after say the 1990s) but are still not the greatest. I agree with the other replies and suggest you have a tech. you trust raise it on a hoist and check the wiring and connectors underneath the vehicle . Have him disconnect all pertinate plugs and blow dry then seal all connectors against water infiltration. Dont let the dealer garage do this as you will get the same crap answere you got originally . You probably got water into a connector or some other occurance when you where in the heavy snow . You can reset your " check engine light " by simply disconnecting the battery for about 2 mins. or if no damage was done the light will go out in a few days and the computer will log this as a " one time only " corrected fault.

Hello Limnes, I went to OBD-II Codes. From what you described it could be engine related BUT with the "1" in the front it could be any thing in the car as "1" means manufacturer specific code. The "6" is Computer & Output Circuit and the "2" is Injector Circuit.

Could you have been spinning the wheels in low gear at a high rate of speed and over-rev the engine? If this is possible the car could have gone in to rev limit and until you stopped and turn off the engine did the ECM reset. But left a code set.

Like some have said check and clean the connectors and reseal them with dielectric grease. Find someone that can read the OBD-II codes and reset the ECM.

You might be able to find or access a factory service manual and see what it has to say on the codes. Also it would tell you how to service it also. Most dealers parts departments will order one for you BUT it can be expensive $100.00 or more.

With a factory service manual it also gives you the added knowledge if the service rep is blowing smoke on the repair or if its more that what you can do or want to do.

All in all if the car is running ok and you can get the check engine light reset if there IS a problem it will come back. Or if the problem has cleared after several starts it varies with make the light will reset but the code will be in memory.

Hope this helps some.

We had a recent thread where a trouble code was set, and would not reset with the battery disconnected. The poster was forced to use a code reader to clear the code from the memory. His problem was an emission code that needed to be cleared to pass an emission test. The best bet would be to clear the codes, and wait for any return codes. And of course look for that wire connector to clean and protect. Good luck.

Hello Limnes, Again After searching for OBD-II codes it seems to be the P1602 appears to be ECM communication's input/output to What? seems to be in several models it applies to "EBTCM" electronic break traction control module. And the P1203, P1274 seem to relate to either number "3" and/or "4" fuel injector and/or mass air module.

And one last thing the P1602 could be related to is anti-thief module/anti-Inhibited module.

Like I said with the codes being non standard they could be anything but with what you described and what I found there could have been an error generated with the transmission and traction control. If you were using your brake and gas an/or shifting gears an/or over-reving could have set faults because you were driving out side of design specification.

This is the best W.A.G. I can come up without a factory service manual. If the car is driving ok now and no other problems are showing "I" would probably just clear the codes and drive and see if any come back under "normal" driving. If not then consider it the situation that set the codes.

And just look/check the plugs under the car and around the trans and wheels ABS system and under the hood.

Hope this helps you.

In cases where water has intruded and caused stalling, a can of WD-40 can be used to displace the water and get you running until a mechanic can dry it and install a good connector lube.

Also any good mechanic will note the codes and reset, then wait for codes to reappear to confirm what to look for. Quoting high dollar "worst case scenario" without further checking just seems shady to me.

Hey, I resemble that remark.
