Mineral oil and air lubricators

05/24/2005 10:45 AM

I would like to know if anyone has any experience using mineral oil in air lubricators on equipment. I work for a pharmaceutical co., and we run our lubricators dry most of the time. We are not having too many problems, just wondering if mineral oil is acceptable for air cylinder and solenoid valve lubrication, or will it cause problems?

Mineral Oil

05/24/2005 11:10 AM

Shooter: I have used mineral oil as a lubricant for air cylinders in production equipment. It seems to work fine, had no ill effect on the seals, but it seemed not to last quite as long as synthetic products. I was not working in any type of pharmaceutical or sanitary environment, however, so I don't know if there is a possibility of contamination of oyur process. It is mighty handy, and pretty cheap, however, so it is popular because of that. Good luck.

Thanks for the comment. Mineral oil is just about all we can use for the air system and you are right, it doesn't last as long as petro based lubricants. We have been using mineral oil sparingly until we could get some experience with its effect on seals, and we are concerned with contamination but the usage is at the end of a packaging line where it cannot come in contact with the product, the package yes, but not the actual drug. Extending the life of the air cylinders and solenoids is what I am trying to accomplish and was looking for someone that had some experience with mineral oil in industry. Thanks again.
