Dear SIr,

In the 220 KV & 400 kV the Transformer Size may be large to accomadate heavier High Voltage Windings. That's why Auto transformer is used. But it is not necessary that all the 220 kV & 400 kV Shall have Auto transformers. If the Client requires it may be 2 winding or 3 winding transformer. The undersigned have the experience of using 400/220/33 kV 3 winding (primary, Secondary, tertairy winding) Transformer.

Regards,

N.Suresh

Dear Sir,

The Auto transformer is used in HVSubstation due to followinfg reasons.

1)If we use normal transformer the size of transformer will be very high which leads to heavy weight, more copper and high cost.

2)The tertiary winding used in Auto transformer balances single phase unbalanced loads connected to secondary and it does not pass on these unbalanced currents to Primary side.Hence Harmonics and voltage unbalance are eliminated.

3)Further Tertiary winding in the Auto Transformer balances ampturns sothat Auto transformer achieves magnetic separation like two winding transformers.
