How did you measure hardness in such a small dia wire ?

If you could , then definitely you also have a spectro, use it.

if the said wire is blackish in color and if u twist it 4,5 times and it breaks then definately it is high carbon grade 3, spring steel , if it is whiteish then it is stainless steel wire ., u can check it by same method of twisting and if it doesnt breaks it is 202,204, grade...try magnet if it doesnt sticks to it then this is non magnetic grade called 304,316 .......if u cut this wire with handgrinder or grind it the sparks wich comes out will be more in 202,204, than non magnetic steel wire 316, 304 grade..you also get a chemichal from any local hardware to check grade of wire by giving d c 6 volt current of pencil cell battery, the color of chemical changes its color...(normaly wire scrap merchants keep it to check grades)

and ..if wire is lying from long period uncoverd and get rusted or oxide reddish then it is hb ms wire half hard......

go to google to know detailed chemichal ,physical properties of wires...u l get a chart table....

for more assistance please feel free to mail me at metalmasterengg@gmail.com

Stainless steel wires are not very hard - 57HRc is hard. It may be what is called music wire and is normally used in making coil springs etc.

If the wire held in a vice and then knocked with hammer it will break with L shaped section as though the material was rolled and extruded.

Music wire is not stainless and is magnetic with high carbon content - you can check it out on the net.
