Getting approximate prices from Internet

12/27/2008 2:39 PM

As part of my efforts to assist NGO's in the design and fabrication of appropriate water delivery and purification systems for 3rd world villages, I will typically evaluate alternative approaches to problem solutions. Hence, I frequently need approximate costs for various equipment modules, pumps, valves, piping of various sizes/materials, filters, etc. Unfortunately all of my cost engineering texts are woefully out of date. Short of going to a vendor and getting a direct price quote on a given piece of equipment (which I would do for a final design), I would like to know what is the easiest method to get decent cost factors/numbers for equipment (in both the US and elsewhere) for a comparative cost evaluation? I assume that given the availablilty of the Internet for information searches there should be some means to do this.

Thanks.

I realize it's a lot of work, but the best I can suggest is to prepare a list of "average" or "typical" items (perhaps using descriptions from entries in a distributor's catalog), and to send it to as many potential suppliers as you can find.

Maybe you could split your requirements into several lists of general requirements - "equipment modules", "pumps", "valves", "piping of various sizes/materials", "filters", etc - then find some 'volunteers' expand each list (to try to cover as many 'typicalities' as possible) and do the requests for quotations.

You should subscribe (at low cost) to a cost estimating software package. It will save you tremendous amounts of time and will give good relative costs for alternative solutions. Still, location factors will often be the largest component of total cost in '3rd world' locations. For example, if concrete must be imported as dry ingredients in 40Kg sacks, large foundations are very costly making reciprocating compressors much more expensive that rotary .

KB

A GA to you sir,

My observation is, few are able to take a step or two back and see the broader view.
