Geothermal Resources and Rotation

12/28/2008 10:02 PM

I wonder,if some kind of sponge or soft material is put to turn around its own axe in a not constant gravity field, due this spindle turns, some parts will get compressed and uncompressed others, even more, is more than possible its surface material is not orbiting (dust or atmosphere on earth surface neither are orbiting since v^2/Rt is not equals g) so then we have two differents ways to get this "planet" heating and since this couldn't be an energy manufacturer engine the final stage i can imagine is the end of the spinning energy. In this way i imagine the moon is dead facing with same face to earth.1)the earth temperature is a rest of the original warmth or is made by any nechanism like said before?,2)Is known the energy obtained by earth in such way?,3)Is this level of power so high,or possible danger to earth spinning take energy from geothermal resources?

" (dust or atmosphere on earth surface neither are orbiting"

You claim that the dust and the atmosphere of the earth's surface are not orbiting?

That does not seem to equate with reality, since if it were so, the atmosphere would be ripping past us at 1000mph at the equator wouldn't it?

Less so at the higher and lower latitudes, since their surface rotational speeds are relatively slower.

It does seem counter-intuitive that the earth could turn at 1000 mph (at the equator) and that it would also cause the atmosphere, so thin and so fragile in comparison, to turn with it, but my guess is that the atmosphere was dragged to that speed by friction with the earth's surface on its interior face, while having no friction with space on its exterior face.

If i understand what you said, you are agree with me:there is friction so then, whats the source for this energy? isn't it the spinning energy of earth? when it ends and why, didn't means a change in the period of a day?

If the moon always faces the earth the same way then it must be rotating relative to the sun. Thus a different face must be subjected to tidal effects on the moon as it rotates in the suns gravitational field. Additionally, the moon cyclically approaches closer a drifts further away from the sun changing the relative gravitational strength effecting the surface of the moon. However, the moon is , to quote you, "dead". I am not sure that the tidal flexure of the surface of an object rotating in a gravitational field offers a significant source of heat when applied at such asmall scale as the moon.

I am almost sure the moon spent an important part of its spinning energy so then is not possible spend what it don't have. In some way this means is dead.Ididn't consider the sun for moon because dg/g=-2dD/D so the change in the sun gravity field is so smaller for sun than for earth.Anyway i am not an expert and just asking..

It is my understanding that the source of geothermal heat which is driving volcanism and plate tectonics is the result of the nuclear fission of an about 8 km ball of uranium at the earths core. The fission drives a series of convection cells of molten magma upon which the brittle lithosphere floats. This causes what we call continental drift. It also tidily explains the pacific ring of fire.

look up plate tectonics. for more info on how this works.

I see no role for the moon or orbiting dust in regulating this core nuclear fission reaction.

A happy New Year to all readers,

although uranium is very heavy it will not be existing as a ball but as an alloy of unknown composition.

This will not change the validity of the origin of heat by nuclear decay (not fission unless slow or fast neutrons existing).

Add to uranium the other radioactive elements, especially the often overlooked potassium.

All these together produce a net heat flow of 80mW/m2. This seems to be small, so think about 80KW/km2 - not really small especially if the heat has to be transported over a radial distance of (mean) 3000Km.

Unfortunately we cannot drill very deep down, technical and economic obstacles put a limit between 3 and 7 km deep.

So we have to look where the magma is rising nearly to the surface.

There we will have to learn how to drill into hot magma (500 - 1200°C), construct heat exchangers that withstands the concentrated brine existing or forming there. (10% dissolved minerals).

And extract some Gigawatt's per drill-hole?

A big task, let us start!

I am afraid for the planet and you want to drill it!!Is it so safe?.Out of jokes now:Shouldn't be cold the planet yet? Is it an accepted theory ? if it is not so complex i'd like to know.

"Nuclear fission is a process in which the nucleus of an atom splits, usually into two daughter nuclei. Spontaneous fission of uranium and other elements in Earth's interior provides an internal source of heat that drives plate tectonics. Fission tracks in mineral crystals, a result of spontaneous fission of uranium, can be used in radiometric dating of rock and rock layers."

This is what I found trying to better understand your decay not fission explanation. from http://www.accessmylibrary.com/coms2/summary_0193-14071_ITM

http://mb-soft.com/public/tecto3.html

I m thinking in 8km of uranium alloy said to be at the core there's enough U235 (> 0.72% ) which is fissile with 'themal" neutrons to provide the heat over and above decay...

Hi Milo,

http://chemed.chem.purdue.edu/genchem/topicreview/bp/ch23/modes.php

Statement that spontaneous fission is very unlikely if compared to decay.

This is spontaneous fission, there may be some more from neutrons that may be freed by

Ra-Be or similar neutron emitting events. (gamma from radium hitting beryllium will yield neutrons)

Fission tracks in minerals may also be from alpha particles - I have seen these in mica.

Decay of radioactive elements is complicated, see below.

All this is not changing the basics you stated: convection in our Earth is driven by radioactive-heat and is driving continental drift.

I tried to illustrate the moon lost its spinning energy in the earth gravity field in same way the earth (or earth+moon) could loss it in the sun gravity field since is not possible rotate in a not constant gravity field without heating in last instance, for first it will produce winds and the particles whiches form the wind or fliying dust don't orbit like satellites so spend energy, may be the same to say about seas or melted material.Just the moon is enough to produce some kind of sea movement.Where from is all this energy if it isn't from spinning?

Occurs today to me if melt substances at the center of earth becomes colder thru centurys, it will produce a shorter day because earth spinning speed will increase ,instead that if things are like i thought at first, days will get longer.Am i wright?.I think once i heard the while of a day changes but i am not sure.

I remmember a tv show in the sixties "magic hands",the magician put to turn an egg on the table, stop it with a finger touch and when he release the egg it start to move spinning again. It could be so or backwards after the egg was previously cocked or not.-
