Laptop Sreensaver Problem

12/30/2008 8:00 PM

Hello folks,

I just bought a new Toshiba laptop preloaded with Windows Vista. I had a hard time getting used to the touchpad so I bought a Microsoft wireless mouse.

I discovered that with the wireless mouse USB receiver plugged in, the screensaver will not kick in.

If I unplug the mouse receiver the screensaver works fine.

I've looked through the mouse/pointer properties and can't find anything that might cause this.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

-john

I haven't had much time to play with Vista, but it sounds like your system is sensing the mouse and receiver communicating back and forth. Normally you would set your system to wake upon certain commands or actions or disable specific actions to not wake the computer. You will need to find out where your settings are to turn off wireless "wake on command".

Otherwise you really don't have a problem. Unless you really want the screen-saver for stopping prying eyes. Screen-savers are really not a necessity anymore, since most screens will not burn an image into themselves.

Thanks charsley99,

Actually, I did set the mouse to NOT wake on command (first thing I did). Didn't make any difference. I tried it both ways to no avail.

The screensaver is not a critical problem. It just seems rather odd that it behaves like this. Maybe it's just a fluke in Vista?

If you Really expect MS VISTA to behave in logical fashion, I strongly suggest you book some time with a good therapist. Perhaps with enough counseling you can be cured of irrational expectations.

You need to go to the MS site and search for 'known bugs' as well as wireless USB mouse.

Hello Johnjohn,

I have Toshiba with Vista and I have no troubles of this sort with either. At first I did have a trouble, it was me trying use habitual XP methods with the Vista but I've discovered Vista to be waay easier to use.

I had trouble with a MS wireless mouse so I sent it back and replaced with a Rosewill RM-6500 "sweet"

1. This occurs in every USB port? Are using a USB hub?

2. You uninstalled the mouse then reinstalled? How old is this mouse? Did you set to run as an XP device?

I have a Toshiba with Vista 32 bit. I had problems until I downloaded MS new software for the Mouse. I use the back USB port and now everything works fine.

I've turned off a lot of bells and whistles on my Toshiba Satellite w/Vista snf 2Meg memory / Intel Centrino Duo to speed it up to match my XP desktop with 512K memory and a Pentium chip. I only download Vista upgrades after everyone else has proved them out.

Try using the Mojave name in talking about Vista. It makes everything alright.

Hi Randouli,

Thanks for the info. I downloaded the "HID Non-user Input Data Filter" wireless mouse update from Microsoft. Wahlah! Problem solved.

Thanks again,

-john
