Lister Diesel Engine Information

12/30/2008 8:11 PM

First off happy holidays to all.

Now on to the problem, I was contacted by a rig today having problems with a life boat engine. It is a Lister-Petter STW3.

So far I have had very little luck trying to dig up information literature on this out dated model. It seems everywhere I check, they are closed for the holidays until 1-5-09... Humm it must be nice!

The initial complaint is "it wont start" "no compression". These engines are for the most part equipped with a compression release to facilitate the hand crank option. I'm fairly certain this is going to be the problem or something else relatively stupid, but always feel better if I have some written information before flying out to a problem.

If anyone out there has anything on the STW3 or knows of a link where something could be downloaded, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

ST range Lister engines have a plastic plunger in the intake track of each cylinder, just before the head. lift the plunger out and fill with engine oil. replace the plunger. When you want to start it push the plungers part way down injecting oil into the intake. pull compression release and spin engine. when it is spinning well, push in compression release. the oil seals the rings better and helps it to start in cold weather etc. I have several at work running right now and this is the factory procedure. p.s. I am lister certified.

You probably started here, but I thought it couldn't hurt to try looking for something for you.

other possibilities; chart, mexico distributors listings, live online boat mechanic help, Amazon manuals,

Hope this helps. Good luck & stay dry.

Check with "FARM SHOW" magazine. They had an article on Lister Diesels in 2008 and a company in the US that knows all about them plus has parts.

Tim,

Guest is right on the ball.

If it wasn't in a lifeboat there could be a possibility that the exhaust valves have rusted from water up the exhaust. Faulty, inappropriate, badly installed, muffler/exhaust line. Or, cracked open water jacket in the exhaust manifold allowing seawater to leak into the heads (old age, like me). Because there is a code for the engine installation in lifeboats 'faulty/ inapropriate' does not usually happen. I guess you know all this though.

Thanks for you help guys. I never needed to visit the problem, i just called them and requested that they visually inspect the valve rockers to verify proper function and insure the compression release was not applied.

I haven't herd anything else from them, but have herd reports of the engine running fine now.

I appreciate your help and suggestions.
