Any equipment (not only transformers), the cost of repair subsequent to failure is much higher than identifying and clearing the defect beforehand.

It is more true in acse of electrical equipments.

If an electrical defect (eg interturn short) occurs, the transformer may suffer heavy damage. It may be advisable to get the signals early and carry out repairs before it goes out of control.

I am more familiar with rotating equipments - and I feel the same principle apply- we provide the equipments with several condition monitoring systems (CMS) which identify the faults about to take place and alarm or shut down the equipments based on logic

Dear Sir,

I would like to cite an analogy here for this question. In human body the heart is an important part of our human system. If heart is damaged survival of human is difficult. The incipient damage to heart shall be known to heart specialists before so that he can take corrective action before catastrophy occurs.

Similarly for industries, substations,Vertical high rise buildings ,hospitals ,airports etc the transformer supplies power for the operation of industries, supply power to areas, building power needs, railways power needs etc.The entire function of these systems depends on availability of power through power transformers.

The transformer is vital link in all these applications.

If the transformer shows sign of fault , then it must be attended immediately .Hence pre fault transducers are used to detect incipient faults in transformer to prevent catastrophy.

Minor fault in transformers have to be detected timely and need to be attended on priority to avoid major breakdowns of transformer later resulting in power shutdown and loss. This is the reason incipient fault protection is provided in transformers. It is essential that the signal from these protective device switches off the breaker in time so that preventive maintenance can be carried out to avoid further damage and major breakdown.
