Any body off the top of their head know how much psi can be generated by a fridge freezer compressor?

I have used refrigeration compressors as air compressors in a pinch, I have attained 250 psi+ with suction open to atmosphere.

Problem with using refrigeration compressors as air compressors is that refrigeration compressors are designed to circulate oil through the system, therefore expect some oil in the discharge, and eventual reduction of oil in the compressor.

Also Hermetic compressors depend on cold return refrigerant to cool the motor windings, therefore continuous use of hermetic compressor as an air compressor will result in eventual failure.

Need to know more information of your intended use of a refrigeration compressor to advise you further.

R-22 systems operate normally in the 250 psi discharge range, R405 often operate with discharge pressures in the 400 psi range.

CEKM, Thanks for the info!

I was hoping to find a way of filling my Air rifle! I need up to 2000psi! You said that it circulates oil and to expect some oil in the discharge which is a no no for an air rifle because it will either diesel or detonate! Looks like its back to the drawing board or fork out 200$ for an overpriced stirup pump! Any other ideas you can think of?

Cheers, AJay

Ajay,

Go to a dive shop, buy a dive bottle, get the parts from the dive shop that will adapt to your air rifle, put a gauge in the line. Dive bottles are available for pressures up to 3000 psi.

Alternative, go to welding, or gas supply house buy a bottle of dry air, or preferably Nitrogen, also available at pressures up to 3000+ psi, a good welding supply repair shop can help you with the adaptors. Up front cost for the cylinder not too expensive, and thereafter refill exchanges are quite reasonable.

Cheers again CEKM,

I never thought of welding bottles! I suppose they come in a variety of sizes too! That was the thing with the divers bottle, they are a pain in the rump to drag around and I was just throwing ideas around in my head and thought of the fridge pump(which I have now discarded due to the oil and lack of psi!) A small portapac welding bottle could be a winner!

Hey, thanks for the input CEKM. Much appreciated

Ajay

Safety first!

If your set-up springs a nitrogen leak, a low area could become an asphyxiation hazard.

This is usually more of a problem in an industrial setting, with tanks and trenches, but just wanted to raise the warning flag.

An excellent point Don, well worth pointing out!

I only intend using compresser air but I don't want to drag a full sized divers bottle all over the place. So if I can get a small empty portapac bottle and fill that with C.A I'll be happy!

Cheers Ajay
